Who am I and why am I blogging?

Hello and welcome! I’m Matthew, a Business Intelligence Manager with Manchester Health and Care Commissioning (Manchester CCG). I’ve been mulling over for sometime whether to blog or not and finally decided to take the plunge.

The aim of this blog is to share my experiences, thoughts and ideas on data, healthcare and intelligence. Throughout my (relatively short) NHS career I’ve become passionate about trying to turn data into actionable intelligence that has an impact on patient care – that is the purpose of the NHS after all! I’m hoping it will start discussions with interested parties, sharing knowledge and techniques for the benefit of everyone.

Given that your reading this blog it would be improper for me not to introduce myself and give a little detail about what I do.

I’ve been with Manchester Health and Care Commissioning for nearly 5 years now as part of the Business Intelligence Team, specialising in Primary Care, Tableau, Performance and Quality and a bit of a web development. I really enjoy getting to grips with new technologies and over the past 2 years we’ve revolutionised how we analyse and share information across the Manchester Health and Social Care economy.

Prior to this I was part of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme on the Health Informatics stream. I joined the scheme straight from a Physics with Maths Masters from the University of Sheffield and had no experience of the NHS. I loved my 2 years on the graduate scheme and whilst there were mainly daunting days I can confidently say that it was the perfect springboard for my career to date.

I think that’s all for now – I’ve got a list of ideas for future blogs and the (hopeful) transition into COVID recovery should provide plenty of inspiration for future content!
